Ben Gibson

Norwich City

Ben is a strong, intelligent and a natural-born leader who made such an impact during Middlesbrough’s Premier League campaign in 2016/17 that he was drafted into the full England squad. A product of Boro’s prestigious academy, the commanding central defender made his debut in 2011 before enjoying highly successful loan spells with Plymouth Argyle, York City and Tranmere Rovers. Ben returned to Boro in 2013 with experience under his belt and became a key figure in the heart of the defence. He enjoyed outstanding form under the guidance of Spanish boss Aitor Karanka, forging a formidable partnership with Daniel Ayala. Ben’s impressive displays helped Boro reach the play-off final in 2015 and a colossal performance against Brighton on the final day of the following season helped earn automatic promotion to the Premier League. Despite Middlesbrough’s struggles in the top flight, Ben received widespread plaudits and earned that senior England call-up in March 2017. Ben has also earned 10 Under-21 caps, scoring one goal, against Belarus in 2015. After interest from a host of top Premier League clubs, Ben signed a new five-year deal with Boro in October 2017.

Ben signed for Burnley for a club record fee in August 2018. Gibbo signed for Norwich City on loan in September 2020. His loan move was made permanent in July 2021 after their promotion to the Premier League.

Gibbo 50 not out

“The SMI lads know how much it means to play professional football and are well aware that it isn’t a straightforward journey for any player. They’ve been brilliant so far and I am looking forward to working alongside the team in the future.”
