Scotland star Charlie has vast experience of football on both sides of the border. Capped many times for his country, the versatile Glaswegian can operate equally comfortably at left-back, central defender or in midfield and is also a dead ball specialist.
Charlie came through the ranks at Celtic and made his debut on loan at Dundee United, scoring two fine free-kick goals in 13 appearances.
He joined Wolves in 2006 without making a first team appearance for Celtic but returned to the Scottish Premier League with Aberdeen in 2008.
In 2010 he returned to Parkhead as Neil Lennon’s first Celtic signing and he formed a formidable centre-back partnership with Daniel Majstorović.
He also maintained his impressive goalscoring record, including a free-kick in Celtic’s 3-0 2011 Scottish Cup final success against Motherwell. He then scored twice and set up two more goals to help Celtic secure the 2011-12 title with a 6-0 win at Kilmarnock.
His fine form was recognised with a strong of end-of-season awards including SPL Player of the Year, Scottish Players’ Player of the Year and Scottish Football Writers’ Player of the Year.
Charlie returned to English football in August 2016 when he joined Blackburn Rovers, scoring three goals in 32 appearances during his first season at Ewood Park. Charlie joined Wigan Athletic on loan at the start of the 2019/20 season and has now returned to Blackburn in January 2020.
