Jonathan Woodgate

One of the finest defenders of his generation, Jonathan enjoyed a glittering career played out at the very top level, including a stint alongside the likes of Raul and Roberto Carlos as one of Real Madrid’s Galácticos. Middlesbrough-born Jonathan started out at Leeds United, where he was one of the stars of the side that challenged at the top of the Premier League and reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2001.

An England international from 1999 until 2008, the classy centre-back spent a season with Newcastle United before his £13.4m move to Spain. After an injury-hit spell in La Liga, Jonathan returned to play for boyhood team Boro, initially on loan, before the deal was made permanent.

He joined Spurs in January 2008 and was Man of the Match as his extra-time winner helped the White Hart Lane team beat Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup final.

Following a short stint with Stoke City, Jonathan re-joined Middlesbrough in 2012, retiring after his hometown side’s promotion to the Premier League in 2016. He is now passing on his experience to the club’s emerging talent as a member of the Academy coaching staff.

I’ve known Lee since we were both young players together in the Leeds United team that won the FA Youth Cup in 1997. He was always a bright lad as well as being a talented footballer and I wasn’t at all surprised when he stayed in the same after his playing days. Like all the staff at SMI, he’s extremely dedicated and hardworking and someone I know I can trust to look after my interests and keep me informed about what’s going on in clear and straightforward terms.
