A product of Middlesbrough’s famed Academy, Rhys made his debut at the age of just 17 and went on to captain the. His all-action style has enabled him to play a number of positions over the years, including right-back, centre-back and centre-midfield.

A fully fledged Australia international, but for a serious injury Rhys would have gone to the World Cup in 2014. The Australian’s big Boro break came in 2009 when he established himself as a first choice central midfielder. He was made captain in 2012 but suffered two serious Achilles injuries in 2014 and 2015, ruling him out for virtually two years. 

On his return from injury Rhys returned to his homeland with Perth Glory. Operating mainly as a defender, he helped his hometown club to an impressive fifth-placed finish in the Australian A-League in 2016/17. Rhys signed for Melbourne Victory in May 2017.
