Nicknamed The Doc, former Northern Ireland international Thomas enjoyed a fruitful career as a tough-tackling midfielder in the lower leagues of English football, amassing more than 400 appearances in all competitions. As well as being renowned for his ball-winning qualities, he was also noted as a fine passer of the ball. After making his debut for hometown team Bristol City in 1996 he went on to make 190 starts and score nine goals in nine years at Ashton Gate.
A move to Queens Park Rangers followed and he enjoyed periods on loan at Yeovil Town and Wycombe Wanderers, who he joined on a permanent basis in 2008. He was voted the supporters Player of the Year in 2006-07, when he also made the League Two Team of the Year in the annual PFA awards, an honour he repeated the following season as he helped the Chairboys to promotion to League One.
During 2010 he spent a spell playing for Hungarian side Ferencvárosi before signing a two-year contract with Bradford City. He also played for Newport County and briefly for non-league Bath City, before ending his playing career back in league football with Exeter City.
